The properties, applications and alloy selection of tantalum metal
In the fields of chemical industry, semiconductor manufacturing and medical implants, there is a metal that is hailed as "the glass of metals" due to its almost unparalleled resistance to corrosion - tantalum (Ta). This blue-gray, refractory metal not only shows complete inertness to hydrochloric acid, concentrated nitric acid and even "royal acid" at room temperature, but also thanks to its excellent biocompatibility, it becomes an ideal choice for human implant materials. When the strength of pure tantalum cannot meet the requirements of certain extreme working conditions, the Ta-W Alloys series, through precise composition ratios, maintains corrosion resistance while significantly enhancing mechanical properties, providing flexible material solutions for engineering design.
1. Outstanding corrosion resistance and chemical stability: Why is tantalum so "robust"?
The corrosion resistance of tantalum stems from a dense layer of pentoxide tantalum (Ta₂O₅) that naturally forms on its surface in the air. This oxide layer acts like a sturdy shield, effectively preventing the direct contact between the corrosive medium and the base metal. At temperatures below approximately 150°C, only fluorine, hydrofluoric acid, solutions containing fluorine ions, fuming sulfuric acid, and strong bases can cause corrosion to tantalum. Even when exposed to what is known as the "king of acids," aqua regia, tantalum remains unharmed.
However, tantalum still reacts in hot concentrated sulfuric acid: after being immersed in concentrated sulfuric acid at 175℃ for one year, the corrosion thickness is only 0.0004 millimeters; but when the temperature rises to 250℃, the annual corrosion thickness increases to 0.116 millimeters; and at 300℃, this figure surges to 1.368 millimeters. This temperature sensitivity requires that in chemical engineering design, sufficient attention must be paid to the service temperature of tantalum-made equipment.
It is worth noting that the corrosion resistance of tantalum is not constant. The degree of processing deformation also significantly affects its corrosion resistance performance. The latest research shows that in acidic solutions, tantalum samples that have undergone slight cold deformation actually have a reduced corrosion resistance; however, in alkaline solutions, moderate deformation may lead to an increase in corrosion resistance. This indicates that from the processing state of the raw materials to the service environment of the final product, every step requires professional material knowledge to ensure the long-term stable operation of the equipment.
II. Core Application Scenarios of Tantalum and Tantalum Alloys
Due to its unique chemical stability, tantalum plays an irreplaceable role in several high-end industrial fields.
Chemical Industry: Core Materials for Corrosion-resistant Equipment
In the chemical industry, tantalum is used to manufacture equipment that comes into prolonged contact with highly corrosive media, such as heat exchangers, reaction vessels, and evaporators. Especially in extreme environments like those with sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and bromine, tantalum-based equipment, with a lifespan far exceeding that of stainless steel and nickel-based alloys, becomes a crucial choice for ensuring production safety and continuity.
Semiconductor Industry: Precise Vacuum and Corrosion-resistant Components
In semiconductor manufacturing, high-purity tantalum targets are the key barrier layer material in the copper interconnection process of integrated circuits, used to prevent copper from diffusing into the silicon substrate. At the same time, tantalum and tantalum alloy sheets, tubes, and other components are also used to manufacture corrosion-resistant parts such as vacuum chambers, heaters, and electrodes, to meet the strict process cleanliness and resistance to plasma erosion requirements.
Medical Industry: Biocompatible Implant Materials
Due to its excellent resistance to body fluid corrosion and good bone integration ability, tantalum is fabricated into sheets, wires, or porous structures, which are used as implants in orthopedic and surgical procedures (such as joint prostheses, bone plates) as well as dental implant materials.
Pure Tantalum vs Tungsten-Tantalum Alloy: How to Select Materials Precisely?
When the strength of pure tantalum is insufficient to meet the requirements of high temperature, high pressure or complex stress conditions, the tantalum-tungsten alloy series emerged. By adding different proportions of tungsten (W) to tantalum, different mechanical performance gradients can be achieved while retaining the corrosion resistance advantage of the tantalum core.
Pure tantalum has the highest corrosion resistance. It exhibits excellent corrosion resistance to most inorganic acids and organic acids. Its tensile strength at room temperature is approximately 172 MPa. It is suitable for applications where purity is extremely high and corrosion conditions are the most severe, such as strong acid evaporators.
The Ta-10W alloy offers higher strength. Its tensile strength at room temperature can reach approximately 549 MPa, which is more than three times that of pure tantalum, while maintaining similar corrosion resistance. It is mainly used in liquid rocket engine thrust chambers, high-temperature vacuum furnace heating elements, and high-temperature corrosion-resistant components.
The Ta-7.5W alloy achieves a good balance in performance, combining strength and plasticity. Its tensile strength at room temperature is approximately 569 MPa. It is an ideal material for corrosion-resistant elastic components and is commonly used as spring materials, valve stems, and other corrosion-resistant elastic parts in chemical equipment.
