Tantalum-10 tungsten alloy wire is an excellent corrosion-resistant tool for extreme environments

Tantalum-10 tungsten alloy (Ta-10W) is a solid solution strengthened refractory alloy with tantalum as the base material and 10% tungsten element added. Tantalum is known as the "metal king", with a melting point second only to rhenium, tungsten, and osmium (approximately 2996°C), and it also has extremely excellent corrosion resistance - it hardly dissolves in any acid at room temperature (except hydrofluoric acid), and exhibits outstanding chemical stability in strong acids, bases, and various corrosive media. However, the high-temperature strength of pure tantalum is relatively insufficient. The addition of tungsten significantly enhances the strength, hardness, and high-temperature creep resistance of the material through the solid solution strengthening mechanism, while retaining the core corrosion resistance advantage of tantalum. This "combining rigidity and flexibility" characteristic enables the Ta-10W wire to find a unique position in precision components under extreme conditions. Although there are relatively few direct studies on the application of this alloy wire in wastewater treatment, based on its excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties, combined with the practical experience of the tantalum-niobium metal processing industry in wastewater treatment, its technical advantages and application potential in wastewater treatment can be systematically derived.

Compared with conventional corrosion-resistant metal materials such as stainless steel and titanium alloy, tantalum 10 tungsten wire and tantalum 7.5 tungsten wire have significant technical advantages in the field of wastewater treatment. Firstly, their outstanding chemical inertness is the most prominent feature. Tantalum has an extremely low corrosion rate in various strong acids (including hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, aqua regia, sulfuric acid, etc.), and this corrosion resistance enables the tantalum 10 tungsten alloy wire to be immersed in wastewater containing high concentrations of acids, bases, salts, and organic pollutants for a long time without significant corrosion. Secondly, their high-temperature stability makes them suitable for high-temperature wastewater treatment scenarios - such as the high-temperature acidic wastewater discharged from chemical and metallurgical industries. Thirdly, their good mechanical strength and processing performance allow them to be drawn into fine wires with diameters as small as below 0.1mm while maintaining sufficient tensile strength and wear resistance, suitable for precision filtration, electrochemical electrodes and other components. In addition, tantalum 10 tungsten alloy wire also has good biocompatibility and anti-biofouling ability, and is not easily corroded or caked by microorganisms in biological wastewater treatment systems.

In electrochemical wastewater treatment technology, the selection of electrode materials directly affects the treatment efficiency and the lifespan of the system. Tantalum 10 tungsten wire and Ta-7.5 W wire, due to their excellent conductivity and corrosion resistance, can be processed into the base or mesh basket materials for electrocatalytic electrodes. Specifically, in electrocoagulation, electrooxidation or electroreduction treatment processes, corrosion-resistant electrodes are needed to oxidize and decompose toxic organic substances or reduce and precipitate heavy metal ions. Stainless steel electrodes are prone to pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion in wastewater containing chloride ions or strong acids, while tantalum 10 tungsten alloy wire and the electrode net woven from tantalum 7.5 tungsten wire can operate stably for a long time and avoid introducing secondary pollutants due to electrode corrosion. Studies have shown that in the treatment of multi-metal mineral processing wastewater containing fluorides and heavy metal ions, the corrosion problem of conventional materials is one of the key factors limiting the lifespan of the equipment. Electrode baskets or electrocatalytic membranes made of tantalum 10 tungsten alloy wire can be used to load active catalysts (such as iridium, ruthenium oxide coatings), efficiently degrade organic pollutants under acidic or alkaline conditions, and ensure the long-term stability of the electrode base.

The precision filter net woven from tantalum-10 tungsten alloy wires has broad application prospects in wastewater treatment, especially in membrane separation technologies (such as membrane bioreactors MBR). The fine wire-woven support layer or drainage layer in these technologies needs to have high porosity, high strength, and corrosion resistance. For industrial wastewater containing strong acids, strong bases, or high salinity, conventional polymer membrane support materials tend to age and deform, while metal wire nets become a more reliable choice. During the separation processing of tantalum-niobium-tungsten-tin polymetallic ores, acidic or alkaline wastewater produced contains fluoride, ammonia nitrogen, and heavy metal ions, making the treatment difficult. If a precision filtering element made of tantalum-10 tungsten alloy wires is used, it can withstand these highly corrosive media and be used for the liquid-solid separation of wastewater containing solid particles generated in the "lime neutralization + chemical flocculation precipitation" process. Moreover, in the deep treatment of wastewater, the tantalum-10 tungsten alloy wire can be used as a screen in electro-dialysis or diffusion dialysis equipment, providing flow channel support between ion exchange membranes and resisting the corrosion of high-concentration acid/alkali solutions.
