Titanium Foil in Modern Industry

Titanium foil represents a precision-engineered product within the modern industrial materials landscape. It is generally defined as titanium sheet, strip, roll, or plate with a thickness not exceeding 0.1 mm. Given such extremely low thickness values, quality control often relies on areal weight (e.g., grams per square meter or ounces per square foot) as an indirect metric for thickness consistency: higher areal weight indicates greater material thickness.

The growing adoption of titanium foil stems from its exceptional combination of physical and mechanical properties. It retains the inherent advantages of metallic titanium, including a relatively low density of approximately 4.51 g/cm³ and a tensile strength ranging from 380 to 450 MPa, resulting in an outstanding specific strength. Its corrosion resistance is particularly notable, with very low annual corrosion rates even when exposed to aggressive seawater environments. Furthermore, titanium foil maintains structural stability across temperatures from 450°C to 500°C, demonstrating good thermal stability.

Achieving these property levels requires highly controlled manufacturing. Production typically employs 20-high precision cold rolling mills, paired with highly polished work rolls and specific lubrication conditions. This setup ensures microstructural uniformity and defect-free surfaces during thickness reduction.

The core manufacturing route for titanium foil integrates hot processing, warm processing, cold processing, and heat treatment. The sequence begins with hot rolling of the titanium ingot, followed by warm rolling to remove surface oxide scales and effect initial thickness reduction. The most critical stage is cold rolling, which progressively reduces material thickness to the target of less than 0.1 mm. Subsequently, vacuum annealing or continuous in-line protective atmosphere annealing is performed to eliminate work hardening, stabilize the internal structure, and enhance plasticity and overall mechanical properties. This tightly controlled process chain enables product widths up to 600 mm (limited by rolling mill dimensions) and thickness tolerances as tight as ±0.5 μm.
