The role of Zirconium 702 foil in medical lamps

As medical equipment continues to evolve towards higher precision and longer lifespan, the selection of materials for medical light source systems has gained increasing attention.

Zirconium 702 foil (UNS R60702) is an industrial pure zirconium material with extremely high corrosion resistance and good biocompatibility. It has been widely used in medical implants and surgical instruments. However, in terms of gas absorption performance, pure zirconium has relatively limited absorption efficiency for residual gases such as oxygen and nitrogen, and its activation temperature usually needs to reach above 700 degrees Celsius. This characteristic to some extent limits its application in low-temperature activation scenarios.

In contrast, medical lamps have more stringent requirements for the inhalation agent. Medical lighting equipment such as surgical lamps and endoscope light sources need to operate stably for a long time in high-temperature and high-vacuum environments, and have higher standards for the absorption rate and capacity of residual gases. Currently, specialized alloy materials such as zirconium-aluminum and zirconium-iron inhalation agents, which are widely used in the lighting field, have become the mainstream choice for inhalation agents in medical lamps due to their advantages such as low activation temperature, high absorption efficiency, and good long-term stability.

From a technical comparison perspective, the Zr702 foil shows significant differences from the dedicated suction alloy in terms of suction rate, suction capacity, activation temperature, and gas selectivity. Although pure zirconium material has a low volatility rate at high temperatures and good stability, its overall suction performance is unable to meet the strict requirements of high vacuum and long-life medical lamps. Industry experts point out that if the suction performance requirements of the application scenario are not high, or if the lamp operating temperature is sufficient, the Zr702 foil may be an alternative material, but it needs to undergo thorough verification and testing. At present, the most widely used inhalants in the medical lighting industry mainly include two types: zirconium-aluminum inhalants and zirconium-iron inhalants. Zirconium-aluminum inhalants (such as St 101) have excellent absorption performance, with an appropriate activation temperature, and can be effectively activated within the range of 400-600 degrees Celsius. They have extremely high absorption rates and capacities for residual gases such as hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen, and are one of the preferred materials for high-end medical lighting. Zirconium-iron inhalants (such as St 707) can be activated at a lower temperature (200-400 degrees Celsius), and are suitable for precision medical light source systems with strict requirements for activation temperature.

In contrast, pure zirconium 702 is less commonly used in practical applications. It is mainly employed in specific scenarios where the requirement for air intake performance is not high, the working temperature is relatively high, and there is already a mature manufacturing process. Additionally, titanium air intake materials (such as titanium wires and titanium foils) and barium air intake materials have also been used in some lamps, but their overall market share is lower than that of zirconium-based air intake alloys.
