The application of titanium plates and titanium foils in the hydrogen energy industry chain

Titanium, with its outstanding corrosion resistance, high mechanical strength and long service life, has become an indispensable key material in the hydrogen energy industry. In hydrogen systems involving electrochemical reactions, materials are exposed to acidic media, high humidity, potential differences and continuous operation under harsh conditions, and many traditional metals are unable to cope. However, titanium, thanks to the stable passivation oxide layer formed on its surface, can effectively resist corrosion and becomes the ideal choice for such demanding conditions.

In the core equipment of green hydrogen - the proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer, the application of titanium plates is particularly important. The core components such as bipolar plates, flow field plates and current collectors in the water electrolyzer need to operate stably for tens of thousands of hours under a strong acidic environment and the action of electric current. Stainless steel is prone to corrosion under these conditions, while nickel-based alloys are more suitable for alkaline systems. Therefore, industrial pure titanium (such as grade 1 and grade 2) sheets have become standardized and high-quality materials in the manufacturing of PEM electrolyzers, ensuring the long-term reliability and efficiency of the electrolytic stack.

Apart from the main body of the electrolyzer, titanium plates are also selectively used in high-corrosion-risk sections of hydrogen production plants, such as some pipelines, heat exchangers, liners, and chemical treatment devices. Although the material usage for these applications is relatively small, due to the durability and low maintenance requirements of titanium, they have achieved cost optimization throughout the entire life cycle and are considered high-value applications. Meanwhile, titanium foil (with a thickness typically less than 0.1 millimeters) is playing an increasingly important refined role in hydrogen energy technology. In the design of advanced PEM electrolyzers that aim for high power density and lightweight, ultra-thin titanium foil is fabricated through stamping or etching processes into micro-channel flow field plates and thin bipolar plates, significantly enhancing the efficiency and compactness of the stack. Subsequently, a conductive coating is often added to further optimize the electrochemical performance.

In addition, titanium foil is also used in some high-end proton exchange membrane fuel cells, especially in the aerospace and research fields. Its lightweight and corrosion-resistant properties make it suitable for key components such as bipolar plates, diffusion components, or porous transport layers. Although the current demand for titanium foil in fuel cells is not as large as that in electrolyzers, with the advancement of technology and the increase in performance requirements, the application potential in this field is gradually being realized.

Titanium plates and titanium foils have formed a complementary and mutually supportive pattern in the hydrogen energy industry chain. Titanium plates, as the mainstream structural material, have been widely applied in PEM electrolyzers and related infrastructure, with a steadily growing demand; while titanium foils focus on the next-generation high-performance and lightweight hydrogen energy technologies, promoting the system to develop in a more efficient and compact direction. Together, they have established a clear, direct and scalable key material position for titanium in the hydrogen energy field, continuously empowering the large-scale and commercialization process of hydrogen energy technologies.
