Tantalum target material: The core material from powder metallurgy to high-end sputtering

Titanium foil, as a shining gem in the field of modern industrial materials, usually refers to sheet, strip, roll or plate-shaped titanium materials with a thickness no greater than 0.1 millimeters. Its precision is so high that sometimes the unit area weight (such as grams per square meter or ounces per square foot) is used as an indirect assessment indicator for thickness control. The larger the value, the thicker the material.

Titanium foil has gained significant attention due to its outstanding comprehensive properties. It inherits the inherent advantages of metallic titanium: a relatively low density (approximately 4.51 g/cm³), yet it possesses an tensile strength of 380 to 450 megapascals, achieving excellent specific strength. Its corrosion resistance is particularly remarkable, with a very low annual corrosion rate even in harsh seawater environments. Additionally, titanium foil maintains structural stability within the temperature range of 450°C to 500°C, demonstrating excellent thermal stability. The perfect presentation of these properties is inseparable from extremely precise manufacturing processes. The production typically employs high-precision cold rolling mills with 20 rolls, combined with highly polished rollers and specific lubrication conditions, ensuring uniform material structure and defect-free surfaces during the thinning process.

The core manufacturing process of titanium foil involves a technical chain integrating hot processing, warm processing, cold processing and heat treatment. First, the titanium ingot undergoes hot rolling to initiate the cutting process; then, through warm rolling, the surface oxide layer is effectively removed and the thickness is preliminarily reduced; the most crucial step is cold rolling, which continuously reduces the material thickness to a target of less than 0.1 millimeters. Subsequently, vacuum annealing or continuous online protective atmosphere annealing must be carried out to eliminate work hardening, stabilize the internal structure, and enhance the plasticity and comprehensive properties of the material. This series of precise control enables the product width to reach up to 600 millimeters (limited by the length of the rolling mill), and the thickness tolerance can be controlled at an astonishing ±0.5 micrometer level.

Thanks to its unique properties and precise quality, titanium foil has been widely adopted in various high-tech and high-end manufacturing fields. In the aerospace industry, it is used to manufacture key components such as insulation layers and seals; in the new energy sector, it is the core candidate material for the metal bipolar plates of hydrogen fuel cells; in the electronics and electrical appliances industry, it can be used as an efficient heat dissipation sheet; in the medical and health field, it is an indispensable basic material for manufacturing various high-end implant devices. From aircraft in the sky to life support devices inside the human body, the thin and lightweight titanium foil, with its tough and reliable nature, is silently supporting the leapfrog development of modern technology, demonstrating the unlimited potential of "small materials, great achievements".
